this one takes the offensive cake I think.
OKAY this makes me want to punch everything i see
HE WAS BEING GOOD THE WHOLE TIME
HE SAID YOU KNOW WHY
WHICH MEANS I FUCKING LOVE YOU
NOT ‘I WAS GOING TO GROPE YOU WHILE YOU WERE DRUNK’
Is that what rough trade even means? Because I’ve been under the impression it referred to young, poor, unrefined male prostitutes. Which I think is stretching Thomas’ characterization however you choose to define it. (Although this does put a new spin on the bedroom scene. “Were you following me?“ “Yes.” “Why?“ “You know why.” “Oh, right, duh, you were going to rape me. Well, better luck next time. Buds?“)
Relatively obscure gay community terminology? Yay, I can be useful. "Trade” by itself refers to straight-identified men who will have sex with other men if women aren’t available for whatever reason. The rough part comes in for men who do this while also being aggressively homophobic, and they tend to go for smaller, more feminine twinks both because it reinforces in their minds what gay men ought to be like (and, therefore, that they are not gay) and because it gives them a nonthreatening outlet upon which to vent their self-loathing. Painfully rough sex is easily the least violent thing that can come of that, so the term came about in communities that see a lot of that men with that mentality so that potential targets could recognize and hopefully avoid them. I believe the name also has roots in cruising culture of the mid-20th century though, so there’s some overlap with the image of rough lower-class male prostitutes. The key element however is that they all at least claim to be straight.
Nothing in the above paragraph remotelyapplies to Thommy or even to a hypothetical attempted rape scenario in that scene, so…yeah. This post combined with the one citing all the complaints about Thomas’s figure makes me wonder why I’ve never seen posts from this site brought up on Tumblr before now. Seems pretty ripe for criticism and parody, really.
